Illinois Installment Loan Calculator: Payment, Total Cost, APR

One payment a month, a fixed schedule, and the full interest bill, at whatever APR and term you enter.

When a bill outgrows a single paycheck, credit is priced in APR and repaid in equal monthly installments, and this calculator models that structure. Enter three inputs: amount, APR, and term in months. Each payment follows the standard amortization formula, while the sum of all payments and the interest within them reveal the full cost of the borrowing.

The defaults double as a worked example: $1,300 borrowed at 136% APR, repaid across six months, means a $305.82 monthly payment, $1,834.92 paid overall, and $534.92 of that is interest. Reset the APR to the state’s 36% cap and the payment slides to about $236.01 on $1,416.06 total. Identical principal, identical term: the APR alone produces the gap, and judging offers by monthly payment alone is how borrowers end up overpaying.

Two honest caveats: the tool presumes a fixed rate and no origination fee, and it prices the figures you type rather than whatever the lender bundles into the contract. Use the output as your baseline, then read the lender’s own contract carefully before signing. Illinois licenses consumer finance lenders through the Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, and those licenses carry the 36% APR cap.

Field notes: tribal loan questions, answered straight

How is the monthly payment calculated?
Through the standard amortization formula: principal multiplied by the monthly rate and its compounding growth, divided by that growth less one. With $1,300 at 136% APR over six months, the payment is $305.82.
What APR should I expect?
Licensed consumer finance installments cap at 36% APR in Illinois. Credit union alternatives sit under a 28% cap, while unlicensed and bad-credit online offers run into the triple digits. That spread is enormous, and it is the reason APR comparison matters.
Can an installment loan be paid off early?
Most licensed lenders permit prepayment, and on an interest-bearing loan that saves every dollar of remaining interest. The payoff will land under the sum of the scheduled payments; get the figure in writing.
Why does stretching the term raise the total cost?
A longer term shrinks each payment but multiplies the number of months the APR compounds over. Hold the principal and rate steady and every added month adds interest: the payment fits the budget while the running total quietly drains it.
